In Ohio, can your employer make your drive your personal vehicle for work purposes?
My husband works as a mechanic and his boss always tells him that he has to take his car to go pick up other cars. Among wear and tear, we haven’t been getting paid for gas mileage, he has wrecked a car driving for work, and his boss still insists that he does. I told my husband to refuse to drive, but he is worried he will get fired. Is it legal to force an employee drive their car for work purposes in Ohio?

Answer: No employer can make anyone do this for free plus the liability will be an issue if he has an accident while on company time, I would never recommend that anyone do this.

I am pretty sure it is “legal”, I have had to do it. They should be reimbursing him for mileage expense though. Also keep record of it and anything that is not reimburse by the employer is tax deductable. It is unfortunate that things happen like that and whether it would be legal or not in the real world we know we need to do it or look for another job. I would ask about the mileage though and like I said just keep track of everything and even though it is a pain now it will help you at the end of the year.
